Treefrog Climbing was established in 2006. Jez and Rol met through both being Lantra Chainsaw instructors and NPTC Assessors. They quickly realised that they are both very passionate about their industry and the importance of trees within their environment. What better way to educate the public in an exhilarating way than to get up close and personal within the canopy of a majestic tree.
Over the last four years from initially attending various country fairs within the Wiltshire and Dorset area, Treefrog are now firmly established as one of the leading practitioners of recreational tree climbing in the UK. Having a good working relationship with the National Trust (N.T.) through tree work and training. Treefrog is now being invited to various N.T. properties within the UK to host events. Along side their regular activities they can also offer hotel accommodation and restaurants for those who want a longer break at the beautiful Coppleridge Inn.
Jez is a professional Tree Surgeon living in Wiltshire with his Wife Kelly and their dog Timba.
His interest in trees began at an early age when he used to visit Dartmoor National Park on family days out. After finishing school in Cornwall in 1994 he took his interest one stage further by studying a National Diploma in Forestry at Newton Rigg College in the Lake District.
Having successfully achieved his Diploma he moved to Wiltshire where he worked for a local landscape company that also undertook Tree Surgery. It was here that his natural progression into Tree Climbing began and under a good mentor he mastered the climbing techniques needed to further his career.
In 2000 having worked for the company for four years an opportunity arose for him to work in New Zealand, so he got on a plane and moved to NZ for 10 months. He loved being able to hone his new techniques in the Southern Hemisphere and learning about and working with their native trees. Being in that part of the world he decided to see what Australia was like and was fortunate enough to find a job in Sydney working for the largest tree company in the country employing over 300 staff!!
In 2003 Jez got Itchy feet again and this time decided to go the other corner of the world and work in the USA for a year. After travelling around the globe tree climbing Jez decided that there was no place like home so in 2004 he set up his own business back in England.
With over 14 years experience of the tree industry now, Jez has put his experience and techniques into practice and is now a qualified Lantra Chainsaw and Climbing Instructor and as well as an NPTC Assessor in both fields.
Rol spent his early years running around bear footed in the jungles of Papua New Guinea. After moving back to the UK with his mother and elder brother they settled down in the village of Ansty on the Wiltshire/Dorset border.
Wardour Woods became home and Rol spent a great deal of time free climbing the Douglas firs with a lack of fear you only find in a child. After a year out working and visiting his father in Australia Rol returned to the UK to study Physical Geography and Geology at the now University of Gloucester. Rol graduated with a BSc in 2000 and immediately went into tree work, a job he had always wanted to do. After 3 years of working hard he started to teach others the trade at the Royal Agricultural college.
Mentored by his good friend and work colleague Tim Bendle. Rol had the opportunity of working at some magnificent properties and in 2007 he worked along side Tim in removing the Dead Cedar of Lebanon at HRH the Prince of Wales residence Highgrove House. This was highly recognised by a four page spread in the Telegraph supplement and an invitation to drinks and nibbles with Prince Charles himself.
He went on to become a freelance Lantra Climbing and Forestry Instructor, NPTC Assessor and LOLER Inspector. He is now a proud partner of Treefrog Climbing Ltd.
In the future Rol hopes to take Treefrog Climbing around Europe and maybe the world sharing they joy of tree climbing with the next generation and who knows maybe a tree climbing documentary..... watch this space.
Rol now lives back in Wiltshire with his wife Claire and baby boy Max.
Lou is a freelance Artist and Gardener. She lives in Wiltshire with her two greyhounds. She has been climbing the trees in the countryside around her home on the Stourhead Estate for most of her life, but now with the aid of ropes and a harness since being introduced to the art of recreational tree climbing!
She recently completed a commission for the National Trust drawing many of the trees in their collection. The drawings are to be used nationwide by the education department to help visitors learn more about the fantastic trees they are walking beneath.
Now with Treefrog she is helping people up into the trees so they can get to know them even better!
When she isn’t drawing or climbing trees, Louise can be found aboard her 600cc motorcycle!
